The ancients texts of Ayurveda have long been the ultimate resource for teaching as well as learning within the millenia old tradition of this healing science of life. The texts themselves are considered authoritative and to some extent also complete in themselves. This particularly counts for the Brihat Trayam – the Big Three – texts: Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. Each of those texts can be studied independently as complete ‘study tracks’. The Ashtanga Hridayam is a special text in itself, as it is said to represent the essential teaching form the other two, and this in a very condensed and logically built up structure – written in poetry to remember it more effectively and to even deeper penetrate the consciousness of the student. In order to stay in line with this tradition, the Aacedmy of Ayurvedic Studies have started a beautiful project of making short, condensed, inspiring video classes with Dr. Vijith explaining the crux of each of the first 15 chapters of the Ashtanga Hridayam of Vagbhata. In this midweek Retreat we will show a series of 2 preparatory video class lessons, followed by 10 exquisite video class lessons on the first 10 chapters – which together give a wealth of useful, practical and inspiring information.

Vedic Society: Mahasomayajña in Nepal

It is with much delight that on this day we announce our plan to perform a Mahasomayajña in Nepal.

This will be the 2nd in a series of 108 Somayajñas. For anyone having visited Nepal you will see and know it is one of the most beautiful and mystical countries in the world though despite all it's greatness and wonderment, it has suffered greatly with political turmoil and until recently a huge amount of bloodshed and violence.

Despite being the worlds only Vedic (Hindu) country, animal sacrifices in temples are still rife. One of the major visions and for this Somayajña in Nepal is to demonstrate to the people that one can uplift all without any need for causing suffering for another sentient being.

We kindly request all who receive this who wish to participate or be involved in any way to please be in touch so we may involve you in the preparations and planning. We also wish to extend a sincere invitation for all to attend.

It is with great excitement that COLORAMA, the Colorado Ayurvedic Medical Association, can announce that Vasant Lad, the director of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM, and one of the foremost experts in Ayurveda, is coming to Colorado on April 29 to May 1, 2011.

Ayurveda en het hart

Het hart neemt in Ayurveda een bijzondere plaats in. Het is een orgaan dat bij uitstek zowel met het fysieke lichaam als met het emotioneel-mentale lichaam verbonden is. Daarnaast is het hart de zetel van een aantal belangrijke levensprincipes. In Ayurveda wordt wel gezegd dat het hart de zetel is van Prana (levensenergie), van Ojas (het substratum van levensenergie in het lichaam) én van de geest (Manas). Bovendien is het hart zowel structureel als functioneel met meerdere Dhatu’s (lichaamsweefsels) en Srotamsi (lichaamssystemen) verbonden. Behandeling van en zorg voor het hart kan dus vele aspecten hebben. Dat is een belangrijk gegeven bij het bepalen van een behandelingsplan bij aandoeningen van het hart. Bij zo’n behandelingsplan dienen alle aspecten een plaats te krijgen in de vorm van richtlijnen en adviezen op het gebied van leefstijl, dieet, remedies en medicijnen, en geestelijke behandeling (meditatie, counseling, stressreductie, yoga, ontspanning, enzovoorts).
Ayurveda heeft altijd herkend dat het menselijk hart eigenlijk twee harten zijn: het fysieke hart dat de rol van pomp heeft en het emotionele hart dat vreugde en verdriet ervaart en alles daar tussenin. Hoe we ons voelen in ons hart is een maat voor wie we werkelijk zijn. Daarom weerspiegelen hartziekten diep gewortelde conflicten rond identiteit, gevoelens en bewustzijn. Niet voor niets zijn hartziekten de eerste doodsoorzaak in onze cultuur. Dit komt voornamelijk doordat het hart vaak genegeerd wordt ten voordele van het brein. Wie kan er nog zijn hart volgen, als volwassenen je hart ophalen en leven met wat het hart je ingeeft?
Hieruit volgt dat bij problemen in verband met het hart, er ook gekeken moet worden naar zowel het fysieke niveau als het emotionele niveau. ‘Hridaya’ – het Sanskriet woord voor hart – betekent ‘geven en ontvangen’: uit die naam alleen al is vanuit Ayurveda zeker een diepere boodschap uit te halen!

…Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat je bewustzijn niet in je lichaam is opgeslagen, maar dat je via je lichaam je dagelijks bewustzijn ervaart. Je hart is een orgaan met zeer veel elektrische en magnetische activiteit. Het hart heeft - net als de hersenen - rechtstreeks contact met speciale bewustzijnsvelden. Die onderlinge verbondenheid is er zowel in het lichaam, als met de omgeving en met alles. Wij zijn voortdurend met elkaar en met alles verbonden, zowel in het lichaam als daarbuiten.”

Dhanvantari Puja

Dhanvantari, the God of Medicine, the presiding deity of Ayurveda is worshipped throughout the country for relief from diseases. There are temples of worship dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari and interestingly enough these temples are located in South India, especially Kerala. Even in the absence of temples, Vaidyas in other parts of India worship idols and images of Lord Dhanvantari. Statues of Lord Dhanvantari are also seen in the courtyards of many important institutions. In other words, the status of Lord Dhanvantari as the divine healer and custodian of Ayurvedic knowledge is universally accepted by the Ayurvedic community today.
