Vata Vyadhi – Advanced level

Importance of Vata
Vata - listed as the first among Doshas - is said to be the leader of them. Without it, everything is sedentary and dead. It is movement and sensation which is the basic expression of life! There is no balance or imbalance possible without the involvement of Vata. In the chapter of Diagnosis of Vata diseases, Vagbhata (author of Ashtanga Hridaya) says – “Vata is the creator of universe, and Vata itself transforms into the universe, it sustains the universe and finally destroys it! It seems to be the merging point of trinity into unity!!”

Pathology
Being so vital, the imbalance of it results in severe conditions – both physically and mentally. Neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, parkinsons disease, paralysis are few examples of it. Degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, spondylosis, etc., also fall under Vata Vyadhi. Many convulsive diseases like few kinds of epilepsies also come under this group. We see a wide range of diseases from gastric irritation to Alzheimers being listed here. It’s the same Vata in different intensities, in different places, expressing different symptoms.

Treatments
It is interesting that the treatment of Vata became a part of wellness and wellbeing treatment in Kerala in the history, and nowadays all over the world. “Sukha S’eelata” – indulgence in soothing things – is explained as the basic line of treatment of Vata. Oil massages, oil baths, poultices, shirodhara, sweet sour & salty food, fresh wine, meat soup of fatty animals …. thus goes the treatment principle. But oil Vasti & cleansing Vastis are the strongest means of managing these conditions: these are serious interventions which could be challenging as well! In the internship we will give ample attention to all these treatments and interventions, their possibilities and their challenges.

Dr. Vijith and Dr. Vidya are great teachers of authentic Ayurveda – and it is our personal experience that when you study with such teachers – your understanding speeds up at least 3-fold. Also – and especially so – on a deeper level! They teach straight from the Classic Texts, but in a way which is super-accessible as well as modern in its applications. With depth and humor, and supported by a team of very experienced Ayurveda experts.

The Academy of Ayurvedic Studies will offer this program as a part of their long term study track, and this retreat will be accredited with 120 contact hours towards the accreditation of your Ayurveda studies at the AAS.

Internship Programma

Dr. Vijith:

“The first week (5 days) will be used to teach theory of diagnosis & treatment of Vata Vyadhi. Simultaneously we will prepare medicines used in Vata Vyadhi in our pharmacy. Students can observe as well as participate in this during all possible hours. So this week will look like:

• 5.30 am waking up, half an hour for morning routine.

• 6 am morning lessons will start.
• 8 am first break for nasya & vyaayaama.
• 9 am shower
• 9.30 am breakfast
• 10.30- 11.30 am practical session identifying & processing herbs used for Vata Vyadhi
• 11.30am - 12 pm break
• 12pm – 1 pm theory class.
• 2 pm lunch break
• 2-3 pm practical pharmacy training
• 3.30 pm tea break
• 3.30 -5.30 pm theory class or practical training in practical methods used in Vata Vyadhi.
• 5.30- 6 pm refresh or shower
• 6- 7 pm dinner
• 7 pm visit to nearby Siva temple (optional)
• 9 pm bed time.

After the first weekend we start medical camp for Vata Vyadhi in the 2nd week. We will do consultation for 10 patients per day. So appr. 50 patients in a week. We will divide students into groups of 5 people. When one group sits in outpatient consultation room with me, the other group will stay with Dr. Vidya to dispense medicine for the patients. Both groups will get explanation from both of us. Consultation starts from morning 10 to 1 noon. Then 2-5pm. We will interchange the batch from morning to afternoon. We work with a software for clinical documentation. That will give reports, which the students can take.

Third week also, we will do follow up for the same patients, and in selected 10 cases we will do whatever external therapies are needed. The same working hours will be spent on seeing the follow up patients & also doing treatments for the patients.”

Weekends: optional excursions backwaters & mountains in Kerala, time for assignments and integration.

AAS student internship in january/february 2013

For participants who are joining the internship with Dr. Vijith in India, we have the following conclusive registration requirements, rules and procedures:

1) The internship will be a three week program, together with external students from Atreya and other schools. The internship will consist of three weeks: i.e. 15 contact days of a minimum of 8 contact hours per day, which is a minimum of 120 contact hours total. You will have to count on some work load extending into the weekends! It is also wise to prepare well, and to work out all the information when back at home, in order to get to another 240 self-study hours, required for this level of education.

2) Cost of three week internship: contact hours and day program are included in the normal curriculum fee, other costs such as travel, accomodation, board and excursions will have to be paid by yourself. We, from our side, have done our utmost best to keep those costs as low as possible. Room/board/excursion: €400 for the full internship to be paid to Dr. Vijith, see below.

3) Travel, booking tickets and visa is students/participants own responsibility. We advise you to book tickets ASAP. We can provide you with information in order to help you with this.

4) Room and board go through Dr. Vijith, and you will have to pay him directly upon arrival, through the coordinator on location. Room cost based on two persons in one shared room for everyone! If you NEED a single room, let us know ASAP and we can discuss options as well as extra costs involved.

5) We ask for your full cooperation and commitment, and for your understanding for the fact that an internship in India is a fairly complex event to organise for the AAS and for Dr. Vijith.

Participation in the program in January/February means that full commitment to that program, as it is presented to you, is required. Personal adjustments are possible under exceptional circumstances only.
