Midweek Retreat - Module “Shadpadartha” and first 10 chapters Ashtanga Hridayam (30 contact hours) 17 - 21 December 2012
Midweek on location, in the Babaji ashram in Loenen.
The ancients texts of Ayurveda have long been the ultimate resource for teaching as well as learning within the millenia old tradition of this healing science of life. The texts themselves are considered authoritative and to some extent also complete in themselves. This particularly counts for the Brihat Trayam – the Big Three – texts: Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. Each of those texts can be studied independently as complete ‘study tracks’. The Ashtanga Hridayam is a special text in itself, as it is said to represent the essential teaching form the other two, and this in a very condensed and logically built up structure – written in poetry to remember it more effectively and to even deeper penetrate the consciousness of the student. In order to stay in line with this tradition, the Aacedmy of Ayurvedic Studies have started a beautiful project of making short, condensed, inspiring video classes with Dr. Vijith explaining the crux of each of the first 15 chapters of the Ashtanga Hridayam of Vagbhata. In this midweek Retreat we will show a series of 2 preparatory video class lessons, followed by 10 exquisite video class lessons on the first 10 chapters – which together give a wealth of useful, practical and inspiring information.

Internship and Medical Camps
Dr. Vijith about the purpose and importance of the free Medical Camps at SreeKrishna in Vaikom:
"Ayurveda was the way of living of the Indian population until 3 generations ago. They woke up very early in the morning. Did the daily regimen, went to fields early to work. Took breakfast much later. Had more resting hours. Did oil application to head & body almost every day. Most of them including my grand parents were fit until death. The next generation of my parents who were just born after independence of India, ironically adapted more western lifestyle easily. Most of them went out of the country seeking a better job. Early breakfast, many meals every day, long working hours, away from home & nature, fast food, using chemical medicine for faster relief, chemical fertilizers & pesticides. Finally now they are sicker than their parents.
Kerala being 100% literate and the most highly educated population in India, is now realizing the values of what they lost in the process of "development". Sreekrishna Ayurveda Chikitsa Kendram is involved in bringing more awareness about the values of natural living through propagating Ayurvedic food , lifestyle & moral advises to the community. Since the beginning, Sreekrishna has always been offering free consultation for all local people to attract them more to Ayurveda. We prepare medicines in our campus to offer the most effective, but cheaper medication.
Still for the BPL (below poverty line) working class people, Ayurveda seems not affordable. They are the backbone of the country working in the field, producing our food and building our infrastructure. Alcoholism, smoking, improper food habits, lot of physical stress at work, emotional imbalance ... lots of Vata imbalance causes. They go for quick money, which makes them sick by their middle age. They are our target group, including lots of women.
Something done by westerners is considered superior by these people. The fact that they will be inspected by western practitioners of Ayurveda itself will attract them into the project. A touch or a massage done by a western person will be an unforgettable experience for them. I use it a lot to attract them into positive ways of living. I have observed them getting shy to admit alcoholism in front of westerners. Many women cry and share their miseries in life. And many of them ask me in person when is your next free medical camp....?”

Authentic ayurvedic approach
Dr. Vijith and Dr. Vidya are fervent practitioners and teachers of authentic Ayurveda – and it is our personal experience that when you study with such teachers – your understanding speeds up at least 3-fold. Also – and especially so – on a deeper level! They teach straight from the Classic Texts, but in a way which is very accessible as well as modern in its applications. An authentic ayurvedic approach is very important in these days, where Ayurveda otherwise is in a risk to lose its deeper roots by too much of adaptation to modern, regular western medicine, which is based on a much more fragmented and mechanical paradigm than was the case with the more holistic oriental or other traditional healing sciences. Ayurveda has its own and very solid paradigm, and it is only when one understands this thoroughly, applies it thoroughly and lives it thoroughly, that one really gets to the core and effectiveness of Ayurveda. Then more than ever ayurvedic practice can and will show excellent results in clinical practice. This is very important, not only for the patients, but also for the profession itself: in order to maintain and nourish the respect that Ayurveda as a solid and clinical science deserves. In this retreat this approach will be highlighted, both in theory and in practice.

Internship in Kerala, India
Vata
Vyadhi – Advanced level
Dates: January 13 – February 2 (2013)
Costs: €1600 (10% early bird discount, before November
15th)
Importance of Vata
Vata - listed as the first among Doshas - is said to be the leader of them. Without it, everything is sedentary and dead. It is movement and sensation which is the basic expression of life! There is no balance or imbalance possible without the involvement of Vata. In the chapter of Diagnosis of Vata diseases, Vagbhata (author of Ashtanga Hridaya) says – “Vata is the creator of universe, and Vata itself transforms into the universe, it sustains the universe and finally destroys it! It seems to be the merging point of trinity into unity!!”
Pathology
Being so vital, the imbalance of it results in severe conditions – both physically and mentally. Neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, parkinsons disease, paralysis are few examples of it. Degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, spondylosis, etc., also fall under Vata Vyadhi. Many convulsive diseases like few kinds of epilepsies also come under this group. We see a wide range of diseases from gastric irritation to Alzheimers being listed here. It’s the same Vata in different intensities, in different places, expressing different symptoms.
Treatments
It is interesting that the treatment of Vata became a part of wellness and wellbeing treatment in Kerala in the history, and nowadays all over the world. “Sukha S’eelata” – indulgence in soothing things – is explained as the basic line of treatment of Vata. With depth and humor, and supported by a team of very experienced Ayurveda experts.
The Academy of Ayurvedic Studies will offer this program as a part of their long term study track, and this retreat will be accredited with 120 contact hours towards the accreditation of your Ayurveda studies at the AAS.

AAS student internship in january/february 2013
For participants who are joining the
internship with Dr. Vijith in India, we have the following conclusive
registration requirements, rules and procedures:
1) The internship will be a three week
program, together with external students from Atreya and other schools. The
internship will consist of three weeks: i.e. 15 contact days of a minimum of 8
contact hours per day, which is a minimum of 120 contact hours total. You will
have to count on some work load extending into the weekends! It is also wise to
prepare well, and to work out all the information when back at home, in order
to get to another 240 self-study hours, required for this level of education.
2) Cost of three week internship: contact
hours and day program are included in the normal curriculum fee, other costs
such as travel, accomodation, board and excursions will have to be paid by
yourself. We, from our side, have done our utmost best to keep those costs as
low as possible. Room/board/excursion: €400 for the full internship to be paid
to Dr. Vijith, see below.
3) Travel, booking tickets and visa is
students/participants own responsibility. We advise you to book tickets ASAP.
We can provide you with information in order to help you with this.
4) Room and board go through Dr. Vijith, and
you will have to pay him directly upon arrival, through the coordinator on
location. Room cost based on two persons in one shared room for everyone! If
you NEED a single room, let us know ASAP and we can discuss options as well as
extra costs involved.
5) We ask for your full cooperation and
commitment, and for your understanding for the fact that an internship in India
is a fairly complex event to organise for the AAS and for Dr. Vijith.
Participation in the program in January/February
means that full commitment to that program, as it is presented to you, is
required. Personal adjustments are possible under exceptional circumstances
only.
Reread this information carefully and then, if
any questions remain, contact us ASAP.

Onze AAS Cursussen Ayurvedische Massage
Tegenwoordig heeft men het vaak over
'ayurvedische massage'.

Ashtanga Hridayam: a special learning tool
The Ashtanga Hridayam is in fact so logically built up – as a complete
textbook of Ayurveda – that even today it can serve perfectly as a teaching and
learning tool for a modern day Ayurveda student who also wants to apply this
knowledge in the present world and life. Nevertheless, all the ancient texts
themselves say that an experienced teacher is necessary to explain the texts,
and that without this it is not possible to get to the core of those teachings.
This fits into the old Gurukula tradition of teacher and disciple, where the
teacher is actively involved in helping the students to evolve through all the
stages of learning these intricate vedic sciences such as Yoga, Ayurveda,
etcetera. The Ashtanga Hridayam is built up in such a way that it helps
understanding the crucial order in approaching many aspects of life, as well as
of clinical matters. Dr. Vijith and Dr. Vidya are fully experienced in working
with this text in this beautiful way, which is a very unique asset. They teach
from the Ashtanga Hridayam in full congruence with this principle and this
makes the learning experience deep and effective, also on a personal
development level – both as an individual as well as a (future) clinician.

Theory and practice in our Video Class retreat - January 2013
The practical purpose of
this retreat will be to infuse the participants with a maximum of good and deep
material straight from the Ashtanga Hridayam – through the excellent video
classes with Dr. Vijith as well as assignments to activate your own
understanding – and to let this material immediately come alive – or see it
demonstrated – in a very real, live clinical setting – through a practical and
demonstration part of each day (in the afternoon) in the Sree Krishna Clinic of
Dr. Vijith and Dr. Vidya. There will be patients there – treated in the clinic
– and there will be the daily activities of preparing the right foods, making
medicines, doing rituals, etcetera. In this way we want to give you the
opportunity to in fact ‘breathe in’ all the knowledge – theory and practice
hand in hand. By the end of this retreat you will be able to apply – on a deep
practical level –many of the very core ayurvedic principles and concepts in
your own life and in any level of practice you are currently involved in.
Practicing afterward what you will have learned in these 21 days of solid
infusion, will bring you important rewards: working with an authentic ayurvedic
approach consistently, will bring anyone deep and thorough results, wisdom and
wealth – according to the old texts!
