KERST

Maak Basis Basmatirijst:
Bereidingstijd ± 15 minuten witte, 45 minuten bruine basmati

Spoel 100 gram witte of bruine basmatirijst goed af.

NEW – Ayurvedic Massage Module II – Winter Intensive - NEW

As from February 17, 2014 we will start Ayurvedic Massage Module II, also called Winter Intensive; feel like joining us?

Module II will follow up on Ayurvedic Massage Module I, BUT… also students who finished a basic ayurvedic massage module elsewhere are more than welcome to join us.

Winter Intensive:
Yes, intensive it will be, because this is module II in only 6 days! (Module II is normally divided over several weekends).

We have done this before - in august 2013, our so-called Summer Intensive - and the student experiences were very positive. Again: indeed intensive, and also very interesting and bonding…

You will arrive in the Babaji Ashram in Loenen (G) on February 17, stay in the ashram for six days, follow the intensive program, and leave on February 22. For more information on the subjects, costs, etc, please click here or copy the link below into your browser

Ayurveda Concepts > The Sapta Dhatus:
Food consumed by us, nourishes our bodies. It happens in a particular fashion. Ayurveda believes that this process gets completed in seven...steps one by one or all simultaneously.
These seven steps hold body and nourish it by their activities and abilities. These are known “Sapta – Dhatus”.

These are:

Rasa: Provides nourishment to all other six buddies of its. It's a transporter of body – Plasma fluids.

Rakta: Works like Rasa in movement, provides energy to all other five provides color/complexion to body. Blood!!

Mamsa: It covers the body and gives movements to the body, Muscular system of the body.

Meda: Collects the energies and stores it for the strengths of the body,Adipose tissue, along with other components, which are liable to store energy in them.

Asthi: Bears the body, make it to stand upright as does the skeletal system for us.

Majja: Responsible for love and nourishment as its structure is also smooth and soft. As it fills the gap in bones, it can be said- marrow!

Shukra: After nourishment of the body, rest will go for the coming generation.Important for reproductive capacities of a person, or can be said a power nourishing the reproductive strengths of a person.

These seven together hold up the body and provide strength for life!

ASHTANGA HRIDAYAM RETREAT IN INDIA

ASHTANGA HRIDAYAM RETREAT IN INDIA
Video Class Retreat : Ashtanga Hridayam till Ch. 15, Theory & Practice
With parallel Medical Camp – topic: Prameha
Intermediate level
3 weeks of theory and practice: an intensive retreat - video classes and practical learning in a unique environment

In Jan 2014 we will offer a unique study opportunity for all of you who want to deepen and speed up your ayurvedic knowledge, practice and understanding based on the teachings of the first 15 – very important – chapters of the Ashtanga Hridayam.

This will be in the form of a 3 week super-intensive retreat with Dr. Vijith, supported by his wife Dr. Vidya, and several assisting teachers to monitor the video class part of the program: Gabriele Karpf, Coen van der Kroon.

This retreat will be about the clinical value of the first 15 chapters of the Ashtanga Hridayam – and is for all who really want to understand how to read the Ashtanga Hridayam in a ‘modern’ and applicable way, how to apply and how to advise its contents, and how to make this valuable information the foundation of your day-to-day clinical practice.

The morning program will be based on a series of 17 video classes on the scientific language of ayurveda, and the first 15 chapters of Ashtanga Hridayam. They will be monitored by Gabriel Karpf and/or Coen van der Kroon, and they will be there as instructors as well in respect to getting deeper into the matter being taught. Afternoons will be spent on the practical application and explanations thereof, referring to the specific topic of each morning program. The afternoon programs will be taught, guided or instructed by Dr. Vijith and his wife Dr. Vidya, either on location – mostly in their clinic Sreekrishna. The afternoon program will be highly interactive. Evenings are for assignments, reading, preparing and leisure.

This intensive retreat is an excellent addition for all who have had a solid basic training in the founding principles of ayurveda, either more practical or theoretical. Though announced as a intermediate retreat – even more advanced students can still always & greatly benefit from this retreat, as it is contains so much deep and multilevel information.

Dr. Vijith and Dr. Vidya are great teachers of authentic ayurveda – and it is our personal experience that when you study with such teachers – your understanding speeds up at least 3-fold. Also – and especially so – on a deeper level! They teach straight from the classic texts, but in a way which is super-accessible as well as modern in its applications. With depth and humor, and supported by a team of very experienced ayurveda experts, as mentioned above.

The Academy of Ayurvedic Studies will offer this program as an optional part of their three-year practitioner training, and this retreat will be accredited with 120 contact hours towards the accreditation of your ayurveda studies (or 60 extra classroom hours on top of your 540 total of the three year practitioner course).

Patients and making medicines

Today we again saw patients in follow ups. Sometimes a clear improvement can be seen. Today we also saw a patient who had had blood letting last week, for skin complaints, but his complaints got worse this week after eating fish and meat, together with some other heat promoting habits, all expressing through his skin complaints.

Another thing we did today was to explore some formulations which were prescribed several times during the last internship weeks. One of them was Gandharva Hasta Eranda Taila, based on castor oil. The actual production was started today in the pharmacy and we tasted all ingredients as well as observed the start of the cooking process. Here are some photographs from this event:

Seeing and assessing the patients

This week we have been busy so far with seeing dozens of patients for an indepth assessing of their Vata Vyadhi complaints and symptoms. Many of them were already put on medication in the pre-selection consultations: in almost any treatment some Langhana will be necessary, which can - amongst others - be done with Pacana. Also local treatment - for painful joints etc. - was given previously, in the form of tabs and oils or ointments, or even Lepanas. Now this week, deepre assessments are made and effect of the first line of treatment of last week, is being evaluated.

Many patients suffer as a result from various causative factors, one of them being stress from a hard working life, sometimes as a kuli, sometimes as a labourer in paddy fields. This is also due to the selective group of patients coming for the free medical camp. This stress in combination with some unhealthy food habits and subsequent long standing digestive problems, can lead to various complex manifestations, and in this case we are particularly interested in Vata Vyadhi. One often seen complication is the complication of above mixing with Rakta Dushti and bringing forth Vata Rakta group of signs and symptoms, especially in many older people. So we have seen many severe pain in the joints problems, mixed with dry skin on the legs, varicosity and swelling, often warm or hot.

Also today: Dr. Vijith was in an interview in one major magazine in Kerala, and his photo was on the front cover. In the magazine was also a picture of Dr. Vijith teaching in room 255 in the Academy of Ayurvedic Studies in Amsterdam!

One last picture in this post is from a special meal prepared every day - three times - for one patient here with a specific digestive problem, called Grahani: the treatment here is not always just massages and pnacha karma, but sometimes also very specific foods and meals as a medicine for a specific complaint.

Consultations going on.

Customized treatment even in terms of food/meals.

Medical Camp in full swing

Today was the last day of intakes: selection takes place on the basis of a real Vata Vyadhi pathology, it has to be moderate to severe, and when the patient has a job earning the money for a family, some priority is given.

In the meantime the students are making forms to assess Doshas and Gunas:

And here are a few short movie impressions of the intakes, consults and making of medicines:

Back water boat tour with traditional teaching

Today we went on a boat tour on the beautiful Keralan backwaters. And it was a special boat tour: we were guided by two excellent Ayurveda teachers and all the junior doctors studying with Dr.Vijith at the moment. Dr. Ram Manohar was the visiting Ayurveda teacher and he taught a class - traditional style - to all of us, on a few slokas of one practical chapter in Ashtanga Hridayam.

Dr. Ram Manohar started the session with reciting the first few lines of Chapter 1 of Ashtanga Hridayam:

Ragadi rogan satatanu shaktan ashesha kaya prasritana sheshan
Autsukya moharati danjaghana yo’purva vaidhyaya namo’stu tasmai
Va. Su. 1

Just like Dr. Vijith always does with our AAS students. And then they all together recited the whole chapter, a part of which you will see in the little added movie in this blog:

Reciting from the Sanskrit texts has always been very important in this tradition. They actually discovered through MRI research that an even more profound effect on the brain takes place when one is reciting while reading the Devanagari text instead of transcription (Roman).

Dr. Ram Manohar also explained about the following aspects:
·      Reciting the text perfectly is very important – in the past no mistakes were allowed, which also safeguarded the texts
·      Singing and reciting needs to be comforting and inviting
·      The voice should be used wholeheartedly and there should be no inhibition
·      The listener should spontaneously go into meditation by hearing the recitation
